A surfacing bit for the jobs a straight bit makes slow: flattening slabs, truing up a CNC spoilboard and levelling wide glue-ups. Four flutes fitted with square carbide insert knives clear material quickly over a wide path — 38.1 mm on the 8 mm shank version, 45 mm on the 12 mm shank — and leave an improved finish at the bottom of the cut. The insert design is what keeps it economical. Each 12 × 12 × 2.2 mm carbide knife has four cutting edges, so when one goes dull you rotate the insert rather than replacing or regrinding the bit. A 10-pack of spare inserts is available as an option. It runs in CNC routers, table-mounted routers and hand-held machines alike, and cuts soft and hard woods, MDF, plywood, particle board, laminate and acrylic. Keep it away from metal.
